2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Shift Comes After Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a clearer direction.
The president noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet community desires.
Trend of Key Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete message from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a sharper identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to heart and overhauled the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. Following several months of discussions, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most popular titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all eager to persist observing the progress of the game in the months to come.
David
Experience of the New Leader
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description states. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that shift every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced launch window or platforms, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as development progresses.
